Storing Dog Treats
In general you should store dog treats the same way you would homemade people cookies. That being said, there are two main variables that determine storage time – the amount and type of fat in the recipe and your local weather conditions. If your recipe uses fats such as butter, or meat bits or juices then it will be more prone to rancidity than a recipe that uses some vegetable oil or shortening. Your treats may mold or spoil much faster in humid or very hot climates.
Refrigeration and Freezing – Refrigeration will prolong the life of more fragile dog treats. Make sure to store in a tightly sealed container or zip lock bag. You can also freeze most treats in zip lock freezer bags. Allow to thaw completely before use.

One of my friends, Stephanie, works with Indigo rescue to save dogs from being taken to the dog heaven in the sky. She’s been doing it for over a year and I thought I’d try and do my part and help with it. I told her I was happy to have a foster dog ad I love dogs and thought of one being euthanized because there are too many in the shelter makes me very sad. SO Tuesday I got a call to have a dog, a husky mix dog, for a while. I went a picked her up at the shelter, She is so cute and he name is Mindy, as in Mork and Mindy. Well, I brought her home and she checked things out and was OK with things. Eric and I took her outside and gave her a bath after trying to give her one in the bathtub wasn’t going to work. She’s such a sweetie, however what happened the rest of the night was super disheartening. I thought Baylee would be OK with another dog for a while but she would just hide, pee and go upstairs like she was in trouble. Baylee would come down, Mindy would smell her and Baylee would freak out. I thought I’d give it a day or so and see how things went, unfortunately, it got worse, for me at least. The crate was too small for Mindy so while she was in the crate she cried. It wasn’t until I took her out of the crate and let her sleep on the floor in the guest bed, while slept in the bed that she became OK. Keep in mind that this is like 2 am in the morning. SO I didn’t get a lot of sleep.
I ended up calling Heather and Stephanie Wednesday morning and let them know that I couldn’t be a foster because my dog is a nut. I felt so bad about the whole thing. here I had offered to be a foster and wanted to help the dog out but my dog is a nut and I couldn’t keep Mindy. Stephanie was great and came and got her so now, as far as I know, Mindy is at Stephanie’s loving on her dogs.
SO I guess I can’t foster dogs but I’ll find another way to help contribute.

Eric and I have the best puppy in the whole world. Saturday, Valentine’s Day, we got up and drove to The Dalles to pick up our puppy. It was such a strange place. I figured since it was a shelter of sorts it would be its own store or something. Not the case. We drove into town and found the shelter. It was in a consignment shop. Funny. You walk into the store and in the back are the puppies and everything. They only do adoptions on Saturday so I guess that’s not too bad. Eric and I had such a fun time picking out our puppy. We walked in the cage area with them and pet them all (there were four) and hung out with them until we figured out which we wanted. They are all lab/chow mix. Most of the girls were flat coat but one was a total fur ball. I thought she was cute but very impractical since I didn’t want a high maintenance dog. There was another one that was eating and a total piggy. She ate the whole time we were there. Finally we decided on the puppy we have, “Baylee”. We took her up stairs in the place, filled out the paperwork and we were off. The whole way home I sat in the back with her hoping she wouldn’t be one of those car sick puppies. She wasn’t. There was one moment that she thought about it but for the most part she just stat and slept. WooHoo… We got her home and shoed her the potty place outside and she went potty. She’s so good. She goes potty on command. I was expecting her to cry the first night. Not the case. She didn’t cry or whine or anything. She just went in her crate and slept.
Sunday she was up at 6 am. argh!!! that was hard but OK since she didn’t get up in the night. She didn’t wet her bed or anything. We went outside and she did her business. She’s so good! The cats weren’t sure what to make of her. They didn’t like having her around because, being a puppy, she moves fast and they’re not sure why. I took her for a walk and she was great. SHe does better on the halter than just a collar.
Yesterday we went to Greg and Hollie’s. We hadn’t really planned it but we took Baylee for a walk and ended up at Greg and Hollie’s. Ginny and Baylee got along great. I was so happy because I don’t want her to be afraid of everything. Baylee was great with Miles too. They all had a blast! Ginny wanted to play but Baylee sure wasn’t sure about it. It was cute though because Baylee would act playful with Ginny and then try and hide behind me when Ginny tried to play with her. I think Baylee wasn’t sure because Ginny was bigger. Miles was so cute too. He was in an adorable mood. At one point he and Eric were sitting on the couch and Eric said “Wow” about something and Miles mimicked him. It was so cute. I love that kid… I can’t wait until he’s running down the block to our house to hang out.
OK, back to work
