This, that and nothing much

Jan 31

I just realized it’s been a while since I posted so pardon me for the most boring post ever. My life :) Actually things have been going pretty good lately. Had the Lasik done and love being able to see. I go back here in a couple of weeks for another check up. Let me just say I’m tired of putting drops in my eyes every few hours. It’s been just about two weeks since my procedure so it means another two to three weeks of drops. I’m still glad I did it. I was at the gym last night and made comment to my trainer that I could read the closed caption on the TV’s upstairs from downstairs where before I couldn’t even read it when I was 10 feet away.

Work is proceeding well. I’ll be off to Boston again here in another month. This time I’ll be there for a week and a half. I don’t know what Eric’s going to do with himself all alone. I’m sure he’ll do fine. This project I’m working on for work is pretty cool and means several trips back east. Since I’m there longer this time I’m going to plan to go all over the weekend that I’m there. I’ve been to all of the 50 states but the New England ones, Florida, Alaska and Hawaii. My goal is to hit as many states as I can before I’m 40. I figure I have a good shot of hitting just about all of them. SO naturally, I’m going to try that weekend to do the NH, RI, CN trip and just have a fun weekend sight seeing and things. I think after this trip I’ll have enough miles that Eric will be able to fly out for free when I’m back out in the late summer, early fall. I think it would be fun and nice for him to come out for a weekend or something while I’m there. I think I’m going back out again in June and then August/September time so that will be a lot of miles, and a lot of time away from home but I sort of like the travel and things.

Eric’s off to Seattle this weekend for a weekend Super Bowl party with friends. It should be a good time for him. Me, I’m going to stay here, give him a weekend “with the guys”. do some shopping, maybe some cleaning but probably a lot of nothing but baking.

Speaking of baking my SanFran Sourdough is AWESOME. I got the starter a week or so ago and I’ve been taking care of it. I made waffles this weekend and they were fantastic. I love SanFrancisco sourdough. I love that tang…SO this weekend I’ll make some bread, rolls and things. I got the King Arthur’s Cookbook and the Classic Sourdough book so I’m set for books. There’s a ton of recipes to make. That, and the killer pumpkin bread I think I’ll make this weekend. I love baking. I’m so glad I’m back into baking. I forgot how much I love it and how relaxing it is. What’s cool too is that I’m adding things to make the breads even more healthy. Like the pumpkin bread I make has regular and whole wheat flour, bran, flax meal and ground nuts. It’s so good for you. Flax meal and flax seed are great for lowering cholesterol. I’m really educating myself on foods and what they bring to the table regarding nutrition. I’d love to be one of those people that doesn’t eat much refined stuff and can know in my head when I eat what it’s going to do for my body.

In other news. We haven’t built the addition to the raised beds. We want to make an herb garden space on the other side of the raised beds but haven’t done it yet. I keep thinking that when the rain stops we’ll do it. Then I think, well, maybe Eric and his dad can do it, because I don’t really want to do it because I won’t do it right, or it won’t be level or something and the engineers of the family will know every time. I do know that this year in the herb garden we’re going to plant herbs so we can blend our own teas. I’ve seen a couple of books about different herbs and what they bring to the party when in a tea and I think I’m pretty interested in that. We’ll see though.

Well, It’s that time for me to head to bed, read a little then off to dream land.

Night driving is AMAZING

Jan 21

Tonight was the first night I drove at night after the surgery on Thursday. Usually, in the past when I’d drive at night I’d make sure I was wearing my glasses because of the glare of other car lights and things made it difficult to see. Tonight I was running errands and had a little halo effect around lights, which I’m told is to be expected right now. The shocking thing was that I could see. I mean REALLY see while I was driving. I could see more than a block down the road. I could see the texture of the road. I could see the lights at the crossroads in front of me clear as day rather than a green or red blur. I was really amazed when I was turning on to Cornelius Pass from Evergreen. I was heading home and usually I see lights in the distance and know, “Yeah, that’s Winco and the stores there”. Tonight. I rounded the corner and it wasn’t long until I could read the huge Winco sign. I saw all the buildings of that little strip mall area rather than a blur of lights. I’m so happy I did this. I find things every day to be amazed about. I think the most amazing is that I’m not squinting anymore. It feels good but weird not to be squinting. It’s like when you flex a muscle for a long time and then let it go. It’s almost like you can still feel it flexed but it’s not and you feel relaxed.

I would HIGH recommend this to anyone considering it. I went to Will Vision and Laser Center. They’re the best!

All done

Jan 20

Eric and I just got back from my post op check up. I now have 20/15 vision where as before I had 20/80 vision. I can see. I mean I can REALLY see. It’s sort of funny because the whole way there and back and most of today it went something like this

Jona: “Can you see that?”
Eric: “Yeah” looking at me with a quizzical look like I’m a nut.
Jona: “I can too. I can see the details, I can read the sign from this far away. How cool is that?”
Eric: “You mean you couldn’t see that before?”
Jona: “Nope, not clearly.”

So that was the day, me pointing out a ton of things that I’ve seen before but not noticed everything. Like the texture of the road when you’re going down the highway, or the leaves on trees and especially being able to see each individual car on the road in front of us for half a mile or so. Never saw those things before.

I’m so glad I did this. It’s like a whole new world. The Dr. says it will take a few weeks for my eyes to totally adjust. I asked him why I didn’t have the burning or sand in my eye feeling I was told I would have. He told me I didn’t have them because my procedure went great. Not one issue. He looked at my eyes and declared them perfect. Oh, then they gave me a CD of the procedure. I watched it and thought I’d be grossed out. It wasn’t bad and it’s sort of neat to see the whole thing. Those of you that are interested in getting Lasik, let me know and if you want I can share the short video.

WOO HOO New me…..

Lasik surgery today

Jan 19

Yeah, It’s done, I got the Lasik done today. It was so weird and cool. They did a couple of tests just to check things and then they did the first part, making the flap. It was so weird because they used this thing called a retainer to keep my eye open and then put this cup on and for about 45 seconds I couldn’t see anything out of the eye while the laser made the cut to make the flap. Then they did the other eye. Keep in mind each eye didn’t take long. Then it was into the actual room to get the lasik done. I could see Eric on the other side of the glass watching the procedure. I guess he got a birds eye view of the whole thing. I’ll get the video tomorrow at my post op exam. So I go in and they put me in a chair and wrap this thing around the sides of my head so I don’t move. Then Dr. Will came in and put the retainer on my eye again. That thing is so weird because I didn’t feel it in my eye but my eye was super wide open. So then they put me under the laser and had me look at this light. I could see this tiny little toothpick looking thing coming at my eye when they reminded me to look at the orange blinking light. What they were doing was taking and moving the flap over so the laser could do it’s job. it was only 20 seconds in one eye and 27 seconds in the other eye. they the right eye first and when the laser was done, they put the flap back and then it looked like a little tiny brush, brushing over my eye and they put a ton of hydrating drops on and then went to the right eye. It was so fast. I was a little nervous before they did anything but then the Vicodin/Valium kicked in and I was good. It’s not even been a day but I notice things already. I can see down the block clearly. I noticed the neighbors window shades tonight too. It’s like a lot of detail I’ve missed before. I can’t wait because as my eyes heal more the vision should be even better. For now it’s drops three times a day and funky glasses at night. I’m SO glad I did this..

WOO HOO

Jan 13

Well, there was a cancellation for next Thursday so I’m going to have my lasic done then. I can’t wait. I’m a little worried but more excited than anything, and Eric’s going to take me so it’s all good. I’m going to take my camera so I can take some before and after shots of me, the funky eye patches I’ll have to wear home and all of that so I can scrapbook it later.
